I have long had a fascination with the difference between the flamboyant facade of Brighton’s Regency buildings in contrast with the more seedy and ‘raggle-taggle’ backs of the buildings. In this regard, their dual character is almost human. I emphasize the difference between the “public” street-facing side of the buildings and the darker mews area using a vividly distorted perspective.
The shadow in this painting faces a choice between investigating the shadowy yet alluring mews workshops or continuing its journey toward the safety of a bright street.
‘Mews’ forms part of my ‘Dreams’ collection which explores and exaggerates the psychological influence of both built and natural structures on our moods and perceptions.
By distorting and altering both the colour and form of my observations I encourage my viewers to look in a new way at familiar landmarks with a surreal understanding.
